Student Societies at STAC

At STAC student societies play a vital role in extending learning beyond the classroom. They provide a structured yet flexible environment where students can explore their subjects in greater depth, engaging with ideas and activities that go beyond the standard curriculum—a key part of our super-curricular approach.

Our societies cover a wide range of interests, from Mathematics to Literature, Psychology, and STEM. Within these groups, students can participate in debates, research projects, practical experiments and discussions that challenge them to think critically and independently.

By joining a society, students can:

• Deepen Subject Knowledge: Explore advanced topics, read widely, and tackle questions not covered in lessons.
• Develop Analytical Skills: Engage in discussion, problem-solving, and research projects that encourage independent thought.
• Prepare for Future Study: Build skills and knowledge that support higher education and university-level learning.
• Connect with Peers: Share ideas with like-minded students and benefit from collaborative learning.

Societies at STAC and what they are offering:

Medicine society: UCAT prep, mock lectures, MMI workshops, medical debates, current affairs.

STEM society: Exam prep. Royal institute talks, UKSPDC, external speakers

Mathematics society: Mathematics bee, maths competitions, Issac physics questions

Biology society: Experiments, study groups, exam resources

Literature society: Weekly discussions on the novel ‘Purple Hibiscus’

Psychology society: Weekly book club, issues and debates, fortnightly film club, current affairs.

Economics society: Guest speakers, essay application, work experience, book club.

Building on the success of last year, we are encouraging more year 12 students to take the initiative by creating new societies and exploring subjects that inspire them. Our goal is to broaden opportunities for super-curricular engagement, so every student can deepen their learning, develop new skills, and share their passions with the wider school community.
